Ants GPS

DOGOnews
By Meera Dolasia on 10/31/2011
Have you ever wondered how ants never get lost, how they always stay on the exact path that they are willing to go to.  Well now  "The Technical University of Munich and Brazilian Center for Physics Research" has found the answer to this amazing mystery, and it has a lot to do with the fact that they got a GPS system on them! Scientists who studied the behavior and actions of ants have discovered by using a normal microscope that just like us humans ants have a GPS system. The difference between their and our GPS is the fact that our is on a machine while they have magnets build into their antennas, which helps them navigate where to go. While our GPS works thanks to the satellites they get there informations with their magnet antennas  from the minerals in the earths magnet field. Researchers believe that when ants walk across soil tiny parts of mineral iron get stuck onto their antennas which somehow make a GPS. Although not all ants have developed this fancy technic, either because their small or because they are a different type of ants. For example desert ants don't use the GPS system but by the movement of the sun they can tell to which way they will go to reach their destination {we give them less credit then they deserve.} Although this discovery is amazing there are a few more things ants can do which will probably blow your mind when i tell you. So first of all i would like to mention that ants have the biggest brain of all the insects  out their, or at least the ones that are familiar to us. Ok braes your self because this information im going to share with you will open your eyes and show u that ants to resemble humans a little bit. It was recently discovered that ants communicate through talking, and not just any squeaks like other animals but they actually stroke the ridges of their abdomen to convey messages to each other.  Thats all information i have to share with you for this blog post stay tuned to get more amazing information. Ants are unbelievable creatures and we should give a little more credit to them!

Dirt
A couple of days ago in Science class we watched a movie name "Dirt." I know for sure that this movie change everyones perceptive about dirt and ill tell you why. Before this movie whenever i though of dirt i would just think of muddy and brown stuff which sometimes may smell bad. I knew that a lot of living things on the surface of it but there where other stuff on which plants can grow. Now the think that amazed me the most is that dirt itself is abiotic {dead/no alive} but there are things that live inside it that are biotic.  I also learned that dirt is a vital resource and is used in many countries and cultural and is treated with respect. Some people even taste it and spell it because they want to show that its a beautiful soil made by god. Iv also learned that we have to take care of it and appreciate it a lot more then we do. Imagine life without dirt or only rarely found dirt. Where would all the plants grow? And if we continue to mine and destroy earth/dirt for minor reasons maybe not in 100 years but in 500 it might be gone. So please if you want the earth to stay the same don't ruin beautiful fields with dirt! I enjoyed the movie and recommend it to all the kids and parents to watch because it will change the way you think of dirt

Orange really suits Snappy the Crocodile

DOGOnews
By Meera Dolasia on 09/26/2011

Recently  it  was discovered that an eight  foot long crocodile name  snappy,  who lived  Roaming Reptiles center, in Australia had turned ORANGE! When Snappy was born and even when he became a little older his skin color was the same as the rest of the clans, a nice brown green color but somehow over time the color green revolved into orange, and the scientists found out why. The first thought that came to mind to Snappy's ex owner was that he got some kind of rear disease, and instantly she got aghast because she thought that he had no time to live and that in a few days he would die. But she was wrong, it was the exact opposite he was as any other crocodile {except that he had orange skin.} The thing that snappy was suffering from was his own bad habits. Turns out that snappy was sleeping in a heated bath was eating pieces of the water pipes and had managed to destroy the filter. This in turn allowed the leaves to fall into his water which eventually dyed his skin {wow thats funny to say, "dyed his skin"} Although experts have assured snappy's owner that the orange will fade away and that his natural color will come into place again.  Because of Snappy rare incident  he become a celebrity, a star if you will

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED!

When did Shoes Become so Sweet?

DOGO news,
 June Liu on 09/20/2011

On September 8th 2010 there was a fashion event which every designer would make or choose his/her favorite work and represent it to a costumers, which were all over the place and not to mention that there were 100 including celebrates because this event was the 3rd annual Fashion's Night Out. While all of the designers were great and had some impressive work BUT most of the attraction was facing a candy store name Dylan's Candy Bar! Can you imagine that. Now your probably asking your self what does candy have to do with fashion, well a lot apparently if the owner of the store is Dylan Lauren the daughter of the most famous designer in the world. Last year she challenged the students of Savannah College of Art & Design to make the entire heel/shoe made out of candy, and so they did. They could have chosen to use any of the 7,000 verities of sweets. While all of the students did an marvelous job with the candy shoes it was one girl in general that caught the judges fancy, Sarah Richardson. Her 2 years work finally payed off earning her the cool $5,000 and some other things {mostly memberships.}If in modern days you could make fancy shoes out of delicious candy bars imagine what you'll be able to do in the future. I hope its going to be something SWEET {did you see what i did there}

New Zealand's Psychic Sheep

Since Paul the Octopus seer who predicted the outcome of Spain winning the world cup, nobody was as good of a psychic, until Sonny Wool showed up, New Zealand's psychic. Not only is it amazing that she predicted that New Zealand will win two games in the rugby world cup, which they did accomplish, shes also a sheep {and when i say sheep i mean it, the one who goes baaa.} It all started when she was a little lamb, she could predict whenever there was going to be a rainfalls or storms. Hence when the rugby cup season kicked off Sonny's owner Dan Boyd decided to test if the sheep could foresee more important events {which to him meant rugby} Like Iv mentioned before so far the sheep's foreseeing was very accurate, and the people of New Zealand hope for it to stay accurate. To enable the sheep to tell his prediction, the sheep's owner Dan sets up to boxes of hay. On both of the boxes there is a flag, one of their country/team and the other with the others country/opponent team. And the one that Sonny chooses to eat the hay from represents the wining team. I know that most of you think that shes only an animal and that the hay shes eating is only because shes hungry i think this to but how could you explain two wins, we might have to wait and see if shell make any mistakes.
below is a picture of Sonny Wool and a video

Living Things

The things I know about living things are that all of them have needs, what I mean by that is that they need water, sun, food or anything else and so on. They also need to need to have cells to be a living thing, like a normal human being or an animal or a plant {A interesting fact about plants is that not only do they have cells they also have DNA} etc. They need to be able to grow and also when they reach certain point they need to reproduce. But sometimes there are situation when something was a living thing but it is not anymore, take for example a table {if its made out of wood.} Tress are considered living things so when a woodsman comes and chops it down and makes it into a table it is not consider to be alive, or so I think. A thing I would like to know is  can a thing that isn’t live over time develop into a thing that is? I also would like to know how scientist see what color the cells in our bodies are? That’s all the questions I have I hope that I find out my answer through out this interesting unit.  Thank you once again Mrs M for choosing a fun unit for us to do.
I hope you enjoyed!

  1. I would like to have the best possible grades from science class, because i really try hard and really enjoy learning new topics
  2. Talk less turing class
  3. Do my best!!! {this goes along with number 1}
  4. Speak scientifically turing science class
So thats about it, looking forward to trying to succeed in my goals if i do {pray to god} i will be happy and proud of my self for putting down a target i was aiming at the whole school year.
